Salvia chiapensis is usually a winter to spring bloomer, but it doesn't
take any freezing weather, so I keep mine in a large container. It would
probably be happier in the ground, but I'd never see it in flower because
it would get zapped by the first frost. In the large, clay pot, it
requires a lot of water, so I have to keep a close eye on it. When the
weather moderates in fall, I will haul the S. chiapensis back up on the
deck where it will get full sun. And it will come into the kitchen
whenever frost is predicted.

I think if you want to grow this species [actually a natural hybrid, I
think], you will have to keep it in a container to be able to enjoy its
lovely magenta velvet flowers.
