Gypsy/Miriam/LABIRD: there are only two ways someone
could use LABIRD to
get the addresses (1) subscribe to the list [but I try
to check out every
person who tries to subscribe to see whether they are
real, or (2) probe
the BirdMail website, where all LABIRD messages are
posted, to syphon off
real email addresses.
I have also had a huge surge in junk over last month or
so, mostly
investment stuff (not just my pals in Nigeria with an
opportunity too good
to pass up). The heterogeneity among us in the sorts of
spam being
received (e.g., some heavy on porno) suggests to me that
spammers and
scammers have been escalating their efforts recently and
are using various
tactis. I'm going to try Jerry's recommendations and
see what happens.
Other suggestions welcomed.

For those of you that have Outlook or other email
programs that allow you to build filters or 'rules',
you can eliminate a large chunk of this SPAM yourself.
I have found that most SPAM uses a bcc to send thereby
eliminating a huge list of email addresses turning up
in the header.
I write a filter that simply says that if your email
address is not listed in the "To:" or "CC"
fields then
delete it before reading. This automatically sends
these to your delete folder. You should review those
that wind up there for a while so you don't loose some
of the ones you want.
NOW you'll notice that [LABIRD-L] also goes to your
"delete" folder... To accommodate your legitimate
bcc's, make another filter that sends all emails with
[LABIRD-L] [etc] [etc] to your inbox and stop
processing any more rules. Place this rule first above
the one that deletes your SPAM and your on the road to
reduced SPAM email.
Now, I do get a few that come directly to me with my
address in the "To:" or "CC:". I simply
forward these
to the FTC abuse website with a two sentence complaint.
I never here from them again.....
Also, the Collation Against UnSolicited Email, CAUSE at
http://www.cauce.org/ is a website that tells how to
complain and fight back.
Hope this helps a little
