Bonus point exercise:

Greek amphitheater bird census, [dates to be determined]

Goal: produce a census (species list plus estimate of number of individuals) of a limited, mostly wooded area.

Purpose: test your bird ID skills.

Instructions:

work alone -- no group efforts.

stay within the following boundaries: a long rectangle that includes the amphitheater and the big cypress grove, bounded by Dalrymple on one side, Jackson Hall/Pentagon on another, Kirby-Smith and its parking lot on another, and the old Music building on another.

find as many species and individuals of birds as you can within this area. Estimate the number of individuals of each, allowing for bird movement. Include fly-overs only if they are aerial feeders/hunters, such as swallows, swifts, hawks (e.g., don't worry about herons and other overhead commuters).

a thorough census should take 1-1.5 hrs.

do it EARLY in the AM; if you start after 9 or so, the foor traffic will dramatically interfere with your results.

on Monday the 22nd, turn in your field notes, which will consist of a list of species and number of individuals, your start and stop time, and weather synopsis.

Points: you will earn up to 5 points depending on how close you come to Chris's or my list; we'll be out there Saturday and Sunday.
