THREAD
I would recommend white
button and carpet thread. It is heavy duty and has a hard smooth finish (glace
finish). It is very strong. I’m not sure the crochet thread is as strong.

I ran
into trouble finding the No 10 100% cotton thread a few years ago so we started
using Coats and Clark no ART 220 button and craft thread. It is a
polyester thread with an outer layer of cotton. It seems to do well for labels.

We use a
thread made by the New Bedford Thread Co., MA 02742
http://www.newbedfordthread.com/
The one
we have been using has this information on the label:
Item :
Whale
Color:
White
Left
Twist 29/98
Glazed
It comes
on a big spool of 4800 YD.  It's strong
and does well in fluid.

The best thread we’ve
ever found is a bonded, black, #69 nylon thread manufactured by A. Lava and
Sons, 847 North troy Street, Chicago, IL 606022. Think their phone is
312-638-2200. This is a thread that will not break, is thin, but bonded.
Does not cut tags. It is so strong that I have used it to mend mist nets
and dho-gazas, yet thin enough to attach tiny transmitters on flight feathers
for telemetry. I’ve also used it in skin preparation and to attach tags
to fluid specimens. It has not deteriorated in over twenty years in ethanol.
They sell thread by the one-pound spool.
