Ron,
I had very little luck with monardas here in coastal Mississippi
in the past. Most were subject to mildew and slugs. Last year,
however, I bought a red one labeled 'Jacob Cline' and it has changed my mind
about bee balm. This one grows tall (at least 3') with large flowers and repeat bloom that I watch female rubythroats feeding on daily. Needless to say, it has
become my latest prize plant.

My 'Jacob Cline' monarda lived through last winter and put up multiple
plants from the original root clump this spring. Those are now blooming in
several flower beds in my garden. Love it, love it, love it!

Doris,
I, too, am impressed with Jacob Cline so far, especially here in
Houston. It is blooming away and looks outstanding. Is it too good to be
true?

Bill and labird: This year I planted the Monarda
'James Cline' that is
getting good reviews on humnet and it is numero
uno with my hummers. It
blooms and multiplies vigorously and shows none
of the problems that I have
had with other red Monardas such as scalding,
mildew or other failures due
to strong sun, warm nights, and humidity. I
bought mine at Akins Nursery in
April and the clump is now three feet in diameter
and still in full bloom.
It is worked by hummers every time they enter that
bed and the hawk moths
like it too.

Being a virtual newbie to real gardening, I was shocked at the strength
of this plant. Not only did it overwinter beautifully for two years (and
our winters, while mild, are still colder than you LA folks get), it's
just about taken over one of my beds. It's very tall and blooming
profusely. The bees are loving it. Now, if I could only get some hummers
here...
